Vitrinite Pty Ltd, is a privately owned company holding an extensive strategic coking coal tenement portfolio within Queensland’s world-class Bowen Basin. Our assets are situated in close proximity to operating mines, infrastructure and proven economic resources. Vitrinite is currently focused on executing an exploration drilling and definition program of JORC resources across multiple sites representing the next generation of premium tier one assets in Australia.

Nicholas Williams
Executive Director
As the founding Director of Vitrinite Pty Ltd and CMR Coal, Mr Williams has over 10 years’ experience within the mining and resources sector, predominantly focused on coal.
Mr Williams has a broad range of commercial experience within the coal industry. Having been involved in project sourcing, acquisition, sale of tenements, due diligence and the negotiation of joint venture agreements. He has successfully raised capital for exploration projects in Queensland and has a proven ability to consistently add value to assets.
Whilst working within the industry, Mr Williams has gained extensive operational experience in all facets of the exploration process, from Greenfield projects through to Bankable Feasibility Study.
Matthew Burgess
Non-Executive Director
With a career in Finance spanning 20 years including senior funding & treasury roles for large corporations & most recently having completed the sale of the largest online asset finance broking business to an ASX200 company; Mr Burgess brings his professional acumen and experience to Vitrinite in a non-executive role.
Ryan Welker
Non-Executive Director
Ryan is currently Head of Mining at EAS Advisors and holder of Series 7 and Series 63 licenses. He has previously worked for Standard Bank, Hancock Prospecting, Mineral Resources Limited, Rio Tinto as well as a broad range of mining finance groups, mining companies and other mining industry service companies as a consultant and director.


Melissa Veti
Asset and Project Manager
Ms Veti has over 8 years’ experience within the resources sector. She is responsible for maintaining Vitrinite’s asset portfolio, including strategic planning and directing the day-to-day operations of Vitrinite to ensure and enhance performance, productivity and profitability.
Prior to joining Vitrinite, Melissa was a Senior Consultant whose responsibility was to provide numerous mining companies throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea (Guildford Coal, Carabella Resources, Stanmore Coal, Queensland Energy Resources, Queensland Coal Investments, Rey Resources, CMR Coal, Goldminex Resources, INPEX Darwin LNG Project, Newcrest Mining and BHP Billiton (BMC) with strategic tenement management advice, legislation interpretation, licensing approvals, land access and project management for both exploration and mining.
Principal Geologist
Dr. LeBlanc Smith is the Principal coal geoscientist with over 40 years’ experience in coal exploration and mining, sedimentary and structural geology, borehole geophysics, research, patenting and graphical computing application development. He developed an initial knowledge base and tools in the 1970s to construct coal depositional architectures and supermodels. This knowledge proved highly successful in South Africa coalfields, and subsequently for building the 'Supermodels' of coal architecture across the Bowen Basin. This was undertaken when he worked as a Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO. He lead the team that developed the generic “Virtual Mine” and “Virtual World” interactive Internet technology approach for integrating and communicating complex data, which were precursors to what has been developed by others into products like Google Earth.
Thomas O'Malley
Senior Geologist
Mr. O’Malley’s has 10 years’ experience in coal exploration in Queensland. Tom’s focus has been in the project management and technical interpretation/exploration planning of a diverse portfolio of coal projects across Queensland’s major coal bearing basins. Diverse skills range across resource auditing and due diligence/technical reviews, data management and validation. Tom oversees technical aspects of the scoping and feasibility studies for Vitrinite projects.
Thomas Simpson
Project Geologist
Tom moved to Australia in 2008 after completing his degree in Resource and Applied Geology at the University of Birmingham, UK.
His career began in base metals consulting to Cannington silver/lead/zinc mine in central Queensland. Following this he worked as a consultant Wellsite geologist on Coal Seam Gas fields in Queensland and New South Wales before moving to focus on coal exploration.
Working for junior coal explorers he has been responsible for all stages of exploration and early project development from generating targets based on historical data through to planning and managing exploration programs.
Tom has an active interest in the resources industry and is a Queensland committee member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists.

Pieter Koegelenberg
Project Geologist
Pieter graduated at the University of Stellenbosch in 2008, BSc (Hons) Geology. Started doing PGE , MagnetiteVanadium Exploration on the Eastern Limb of the BIC ( South Africa).
Since 2010 he worked for Gemecs, doing basic modelling, data management, desktop studies and managing exploration drilling programs in coal, clients included BHP, Muhanga, Optimum Coal, Universal Coal and Exceed. He also did work for Boynton’s PPM in the western limb of the BIC on PGE’s.
From 2012 he worked as Senior Geologist on Peabody’s Burton, Moorvale and Coppabbella mine, as well as on the Mungara, West Walker and West Burton projects for Peabody Exploration. He worked as Senior Geologist on QCI’s Suttor and Rankin Creek projects, until joining Vitrinite in 2016.
